The Sailing Centre, I.
O. S. Ltd
&
Ravensporth
Sailing Base, Tresco
Instructor
Job description:
We
are currently looking for instructors with the following qualifications: Dinghy
SI, dinghy, windsurf, powerboat and sea kayaking. All applicants will need to provide two
referees, CRB check, and have all of their qualifications current and first aid
valid prior to start of employment.
The
following personal attributes are also required: presentable, reliable, team
players, honest, friendly, good interpersonal skills, enthusiasm and vitally, a
sense of humour.
We
operate two centres on Scilly during the peak summer months. Our main base on
St. Mary’s from May to late September and our second centre on Tresco during
July and August. We are an RYA centre teaching dinghy sailing, windsurfing and
power boating. We also hire boats, windsurf kit and sit-on kayaks from our
bases and through out the islands. The majority of our clients are
holidaymakers with most sessions being 1-2 hour lessons or taster courses,
teaching beginners and children.
As
well as instructing the job involves dealing with enquiries, arranging hires,
preparing equipment for clients and tuition, handling money, rescue cover,
general basic maintenance, having fun, delivering equipment to other islands
and other general duties to keep the centres operational.
Instructors
are alternated between each base so that they have a good understanding of the
two set-ups and will themselves have a good variety of sailing areas and a
varied daily working pattern.
We
employ approximately 10 instructors at peak season with varying start and
finish dates which we are flexible on, so fit in well with university term
dates etc. Main employment period is early July – 1st week of
September, we do employ from May to October depending on ability and
experience.
We
work on a 6-day week aprox 9am till 6pm daily. Salary varies depending on
experience and ability from approx £200-£300 per week. Accommodation is found
for you and the rent is capped by the centre so all staff pay the same (weekly
accom 2007 £35 per week room only).
Instructors
will be teaching for aprox 4-6 hours a day during peak periods with the rest of
the time spent manning the centre and carrying out other duties. We try to
ensure that each instructor has a set day off, however this may need to change
due to weather or bookings. We are flexible and happy to give additional days
off at certain periods should you have friends visiting or wish to get to see
more of the place etc.
The
sailing conditions here are varied with a vareity of wind conditions and a
large cruising area to navigate. All of our staff find that their time here
vastly improves their sailing ability and seamanship skills, as you will be
required to sail on and off moorings, anchors and lee shores and navigate
between the islands throughout the course of the job. Providing you have a good
basic boating knowledge (which all instructors should) then with training
provided through out the job you will be confident and happy to teach from each
base.
Scilly
is a stunning place to live and work, but we must warn you it is quiet by some
standards, if you are expecting night clubs and shopping perhaps
We
also run a guest house/ coffee shop/ sandwich bar so have employment
opportunities for friends/ partners if required.
Scilly
is an excellent venue to spend a summer, working hard but playing hard also. We
try to strive to make working and living here as much fun as possible. With
crystal clear waters and deserted white sand beaches cruising between islands
while you teach, will make for an unforgettable season.
Please
give me a call to chat about the position further. For more info on Scilly have
